The countdown for the evacuation of the Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip has begun. The Israel Defense Forces have distributed letters to the settlers saying they must leave voluntarily by midnight on August 14th. If they do not, IDF soldiers will move in on August 17th to remove them by force. Some residents agree to leave others do not. Dr. Sody Naimer, who lives with his family in the settlement of Neve Dakalim, says he is not going anywhere. In anexclusiveinterview with David Essing, Dr. Naimer describes what it’s like at the clinic he runs in the settlement.
The first step of the Israeli evacuation from the Gaza Strip is underway. The Israel Defense Forces have started distributing written orders to the settlers telling them they must pack up and leave their homes no later than midnight on Sunday, August 14th. After that, time’s up for their voluntary evacuation and Israeli authorities will view their presence in the Gaza as illegal. On August 17th IDF soldiers will then move in to remove them by force those settlers who have not left. However, most of the settlers say they have not received the written instructions signed by the IDF commander of the Gaza Strip area; officials in the settlements have refused to distribute the letters as a sign of protest. Dr. Sody Naimer, who grew up in Montreal Canada, refuses to pack up his clinic and home in Neve Dekalim. Dr Naimer says he and his fellow settlers are still hoping for a miracle to stop what he views as a dangerous and immoral step by ‘Mr. Sharon’.
