Natan Sharansky Blasts Canadian Unions Anti-Israeli Resolution
Knesset Member Natan Sharansky charges the anti-Israeli resolution adopted by a big union of public service employees in Ontario is a call for Israels destruction. The resolution supported a boycott of Israel and demanded that Palestinian refugees be allowed to return to the Jewish state. The Canadian unions resolution follows a move of British academicians who voted to boycott their Israeli colleagues who did not condemn Israeli government actions
We are in the middle of a war to de-legitimize the state of Israel. Thats the reaction of Natan Sharansky to the harsh anti-Israeli resolutions adopted by a big public service employees union in Canada and by British academicians. Sharansky warned these were not isolated anti-Semitic measures but part of an ongoing campaign that subsided temporarily after 9/11. At a meeting of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, the human rights activist told Foreign Minister Livni that Israel should be leading the struggle but is not doing so.
Sharansky rejected the contention that those supporting the resolutions were only criticizing Israeli policies and were not anti-Semitic. He said that when they apply standards to Israel that are not applied anywhere else this was anti-Semitism. He cited that when Israel took legitimate measures to defend its citizens from Palestinian suicide bombers this was branded as apartheid. In his view, the Jewish state has now become the target for attacking Jews. And he added that those who demand the return of Palestinian refugees to Israel favored the ultimate destruction of the Jewish state.
