The Fellowship of Israel and Black America (FIBA) was launched formally in Israel yesterday in honor of the birthday of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. (15th of January), through the Knesset Christian Allies Caucus, with the announcement of the Martin Luther King Jr. Israel Award. Pivotal to the launch was the announcement of the first Award ceremony which will take place in Jerusalem on Dr King's birthday next year, 15 January 2008.

Pastor Glenn Plummer, Chairman and CEO of the Fellowship of Israel and Black America, was interviewed by Israeli Channel 1. He referred to the new controversial book by former US President Carter.

Glenn Plummer: "I've been in Israel many times. I've seen Ethiopian Jews. I've seen Palestinians. I've been to Bethlehem . What was not happening in South Africa, there were not suicide bombings by blacks against the white regime in South Africa. What was not happening was there was not a declaration to eliminate and destroy, utterly, every white person in South Africa. That wasn't happening. What's happening here is that you have regimes that are calling for the absolute annihilation of the Jewish people, and Israel in particular. And you have Israel, some would say, don't have a right to defend itself? That's absurd. And so, to compare apartheid with what is happening here, as a black, is frankly insulting. And so not only is it wrong, but the analogy, with all do respect to President Carter, is an attempt to sell some books. It's like someone saying Israel is Goliath and the Arab communities, including the Palestinians, are David, and it is so opposite of what actually is happening. Clearly I don't agree with it. There are millions of Africans Americans who do, in their heart, stand with Israel and the Jewish people. There are thousands of black pastors in America who feel very strongly and passionately for Israel and the Jewish people. I was here to announce an award that would be annual, here in Israel, at the Knesset. It is a Martin Luther King Israel award. And Martin Luther King Jr. was not only pro Israel, but Martin Luther King Jr. basically defined Zionism by saying that Zionism is the right of the Jewish people to rebuild their plundered land and for them to come and be the people of God here in this land. So Dr. King, who embodied black America , certainly would not agree with President Carter's analogy of apartheid."

African Americans and Members of Knesset launch Martin Luther King Jr. Israel Award in the Knesset, and receive unqualified backing from US Ambassador in Israel Richard Jones. Pivotal to the launch was the announcement of the first Award ceremony which will take place in Jerusalem on Dr King's birthday next year, 15 January 2008

In attendance at the historic event were the Members of Knesset, the US Ambassador to Israel Richard Jones and Mrs. Jones, the Ethiopian Archbishop and clergy, the Chief Rabbi of the Ethiopian Jewish Community in Israel, representatives of the Christian Embassy in Jerusalem, the ADL, AIPAC, JNF, El Al, a delegation from FIBA made up mainly of African American Pastors and leaders, and others.

In addition to announcing the award, Pastor Glenn Plummer, Chairman and CEO of the Fellowship of Israel and Black America (FIBA) also announced a Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial will be built in Jerusalem.

Already there are far-reaching effects of this FIBA event at the Knesset. This event brought about the participation of US Ambassador Jones for the first time ever at a Knesset Christian Allies Caucus event. Ambassador Jones was very excited about the idea of a King memorial and pledged his active support. He went as far as to state unequivocally that the Fellowship of Israel and Black America was not only helping the relationship between African Americans, Israel and American Jews, but was furthering the relationship between Israel and America.

The Fellowship of Israel and Black America (FIBA) is headquartered in Metropolitan Detroit . FIBA was founded a year ago by Pastor Glenn Plummer, former Chairman of the National Religious Broadcasters of America (NRB), for the purpose of nurturing, developing, expanding, and calling upon the African American community to embrace its natural friendship and alliance with Israel and American Jews. FIBA is committed to establishing a strong relationship between African Americans and Israel, and to rebuilding the once strong relationship between African Americans and American Jews that began during the days of the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
