Witness to the abduction of Gilad Shalit

Palestinian witness: 'I wanted to give water to the soldier but the militants prevented me'

Abducted soldier Gilad Shalit

540 days after the abduction of Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit, the Islamic Jihad's Web site publishes the first witness account of the incident. The witness, a Palestinian resident of the southern Gaza Strip, said the terrorists prevented him from from giving water to the wounded soldier.

Six months ago the Hamas released a recorded message from Corporal Gilad Shalit. The message was posted on the Web site of Hamas's military wing.

The witness said that when he heard explosions and gun shots east of Rafah he left his house and saw three men carrying weapons and dressed in army uniforms. The three terrorists were dragging the wounded soldier Gilad Shalit, after they carried out a cross border raid into Israel killing two soldiers and abducting Shalit.

The witness said that the soldier looked wounded and almost unconscious, with blood stains and burns on his face, hands, and parts of his upper body.

"The militants prevented me from coming closer to the soldier and give him water, and they ordered me to move away from the area," the witness said.

No official Israeli reaction has been made to the new Palestinian testimony.
