OBAMA & HIS MUSLIM MANIACS

U.S. President Obama

The historical irony is striking, on the thirteenth anniversary of 9/11, another U.S. President, Barack Obama, has been forced to declare total war on a new breed of Muslim maniacs. However, Obama is no George Bush, a ranting Republican hawk raring to take on al Qaeda. This time it was a dovish Democrat, who at the outset of his term, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his campaign promises - the judges in Oslo had discerned correctly that Obama would take a new approach in the Middle East and conclude America's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. But the reality of fanatical Islam, far more savage than even al Qaida, has upset Obama's 'best laid plans'.

Obama's rhetoric would have done Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu proud - substitute America for Israel and Hamas for ISIL.

Amid the barbarity of 192,000 Syrians being massacred by the Assad regime and the atrocities of ISIL in Iraq, the beheading of two American reporters has had a visceral effect on U.S. public opinion. Bush was shocked by the Twin Towers tragedy into immediate action, and now Obama, prodded by public opinion, is ready to expand US bombing of ISIL from Iraq into Syria: 'This is a core principle: If you threaten America, you will find no safe haven'. Obama's rhetoric would have done Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu proud - substitute America for Israel and Hamas for ISIL. It is also ironic that the President, who planned to ride out his second term by bringing to an end America's costly military operations in the Middle East, and leaving a Woodrow Wilson legacy of distancing America from foreign wars, is now faced with implementing a new war strategy against a new breed of Jihadists.

In fact, Obama has been forced to rewrite a basic tenet of Clausewitz who contended: 'War is the continuation of politics by other means,' and to do so by 'an act of violence intended to compel our opponent to fulfill our will'. Today President Obama has defined his new strategy against Islamist terrorism as even more far reaching - no engaging, no containing, but the ultimate destruction of ISIL: 'Our objective is clear. We will degrade, and ultimately destroy, ISIL through a comprehensive and sustained counterterrorism strategy'.

Indeed, Obama's reliance on soft power may have influenced Putin's hard stand on Ukraine. But Ukraine is not a threat to 'the homeland', and the American leader has stressed that ISIL is.

But will Obama's deeds match his declarations? His critics at home recall his bellicose warning in the summer of 2013 to Syria's President Bashar over the use of chemical weapons against the rebels. But when Assad did not heed it, Obama backed down. Moreover, Obama's appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin to get him off the hook may also have had a far-reaching effect beyond the Middle East. Maybe Obama was right to resort to diplomacy, but it created the impression that the U.S. leader did not back up his words with action. Rather than 'talk softly but carry a big stick', Obama had created the persona of 'talk loudly but carry a little stick'. Indeed, Obama's reliance on soft power may have influenced Putin's hard stand on Ukraine. But Ukraine is not a threat to 'the homeland', and the American leader has stressed that ISIL is.

US President George W. Bush

At the same time, Obama has distanced himself from George W. Bush by declaring that there would be no American forces fighting on foreign soil. The problem is, his NATO allies and the Arab states are backing Obama's tough talk on ISIL, but when it comes to joining in air strikes, let alone ground operations, they seem to respond with a negative 'Who, me?' Then again, can air power alone defeat the estimated 20,000 to 30,000 ISIL fighters?

 Israel, the uninvited outsider

The Israeli concern is that Washington will make a deal with Iran for its support against ISIL by easing up on Iran's nuclear weapons program.

Obviously, with ISIL forces approaching Israel's northern border, the Jewish state has more than a passing interest in Obama's campaign against ISIL, but its participation would arouse anger among Islamists in Arab states and other countries with sizeable Muslim communities. Nevertheless, Prime Minister Netanyahu has disclosed that Israel is doing its bit - reportedly by supplying intelligence information that is even conveyed to the Arab states, Turkey, and possibly even Iran (with the source deleted). The Israeli concern is that Washington will make a deal with Iran for its support against ISIL by easing up on Iran's nuclear weapons program.

Journalist James Foley, who was executed by ISIL

So just what is ISIL, this savage Islamist horde that is attracting thousands of Muslim volunteers from around the world? It is a Sunni super-orthodox Muslim organization that claims supremacy over all Muslims by insisting that only its religious interpretations are valid. There is no room for dissenters. All the rest are infidels or apostates, such as all of Shiite Islam. Keep in mind that Iran is Shiite, so ISIL and Iran are on a collision course. Iraq also has a majority of Shiites, and the Alawite regime in Syria is a branch of Shia Islam. Lebanon is a hodge-podge of various religions - Sunnis, Shiites and Christians. Moving south, Israel is obviously not kosher, so to speak, nor is Jordan. If anything, ISIL is somewhat akin to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, which was actually Obama's preferred government! Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states are also Muslim apostates in the eyes of ISIL.

ISIL is gaining converts in ... U.S., France, Britain and Scandinavia ... even from those 'downtrodden and persecuted' Muslim communities in Australia and Canada.

By declaring the Caliphate in a large tract of Iraq and Syria, this obligates all the inhabitants to abide by ISIL's religious rules, or else! The danger is that the religious fervor aroused by ISIL's dramatic territorial gains may arouse a wave of support throughout the Arab world, perhaps leading to revolution. Bear in mind, it is still in the throes of the so-called Arab Spring. And would you believe it? ISIL is gaining converts not only in the U.S., France, Britain and Scandinavia, but even from those 'downtrodden and persecuted' Muslim communities in Australia and Canada.

 Australia in ISIL crosshairs!

Australian PM Tony Abbott

It is a sign of the times - Australia has raised its terror alert to 'high'. Prime Minister Tony Abbott called a news conference to announce: 'Our Security and Intelligence agencies are concerned about the increasing number of Australians working with, connected, or inspired by terrorist groups such as ISIL, Jabhat al-Nusra, and al Qaeda. The threat they pose has been increasing for more than a year'. And what can be made of Abbot's follow-up comment: 'Nothing that I have said has anything to do with religion. This is about crime, potential crime and combating crime'. Come again mate? You just spoke of the threat coming from ISIL, (Islamic State in Syria and the Levant), Jabhat al-Nusra, and al Qaeda. Are these not Islamic Jihadist organizations whose goal is to return 1,300 years ago to the birth of Mohammed and to continue his holy war to impose Islam on the whole world? This is part of the global problem, and it has nothing to do with Israel and the Palestinians. With all due respect, it most certainly does have to do with radical and Jihadist Islam.

At their trial one of the killers, Michael Adebolajo told the judge: 'I am a soldier of Allah - this is war!'

In Britain, Prime Minister David Cameron is now considering action to bar British Muslims who joined ISIL in perpetrating atrocities in Iraq and Syria. It's better late than never. Last year in a London street, two Muslim converts hacked to death British soldier, Lee Rigby with knives and a meat cleaver. They actually tried to behead him. At their trial one of the killers, Michael Adebolajo told the judge: 'I am a soldier of Allah - this is war!'

An estimated 10 Israeli Arabs are believed to have also gone to join up with ISIL. Justice Minister Tzipi Livni is now preparing a bill barring membership in any similar Jihadist organization. What is the attraction of ISIL for young Muslims or converts living in Western countries? An Israeli Arab, who is well educated and integrated into Israeli life with a good job, told Channel 10 TV that he actually supports ISIL. He feels it is a purely religious belief, and that what he sees as pure Islam is destined to rule the world as ordained by the Prophet Mohammed. While he personally distanced himself from the barbarity, ISIL would allow other believers to convert to Islam and remain alive. However, there would be no forgiveness for those who took up arms against ISIL.

...the US should have left a residual force in Iraq to maintain the balance of power between the Shiites and Sunnis.

The fact that the one and only Supreme Leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is said to be linked to the Prophet Mohammed himself lends adoration to his rule and grants him authority over all Muslims in the eyes of his fervent followers. He was destined to Islam's former Islamic glory and domination. So far, Abu Bakr al Baghdadi has been delivering the goods with his sweep through Iraq and Syria. It is argued that Obama's precipitous withdrawal from Iraq left a power struggle between the Shiite and Sunni communities in Iraq that has resulted in the collapse of the Iraqi army, and permitted ISIL to move in and take control. In other words, the US should have left a residual force in Iraq to maintain the balance of power between the Shiites and Sunnis. Whatever the case, the U.S. President now faces as monumental a war as did his predecessor.
