Pope Benedict & The Jews

Dr. Yizthak Minerbi: 'Let Us Hope Pope Benedict Will Learn Necessary Lesson From Holocaust During His Visit To Holocaust Memorial In Jerusalem'

'The Pope's Membership In Hitler Youth Organization During World War II Has No Bearing On Today - He Was No More Nazi Than Any Other Normal Nazi Of His Age'

'Vatican Invariably Sides With Palestinians Against Israel'

Pope Benedict XVI is about to begin an historic five-day visit not to Israel but to the 'Holy Land' - that is the preferred Vatican terminology. Dr. Yizthak Minerbi, an Israeli expert on Vatican affairs, who lived through the Holocaust, discussed with David Essing the various aspects of the Pope's approach to Israel and the Jewish people.

'Now the Pope apparently feels he should be more balanced but he is still pro- Palestinian, period'

' Israel would hope that during his visit, Pope Benedict will grasp a little of the Israeli reality in the conflict with the Palestinians' - that's the view of Dr. Yizthak Minerbi who monitors Israeli-Vatican relations. But he also noted that the Vatican has chosen to present it as a visit to the 'Holy Land' not to the state of Israel. Recently, the Jewish people have had several sharp differences with the Pope over his initial lifting of the excommunication of Bishop Richard Williamson, a Holocaust denier. In addition, the Pontiff is also considering the canonization of Pope Pius XII, who is suspected of being indifferent to the Nazi extermination of the Jews during WWII. Pope Pius also aided at least one notorious Nazi in escaping to Argentina.

Although the Vatican has rejected a request by West Bank Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas that he speak at a Palestinian refugee camp, Dr. Minerbi said Pope Benedict invariably sides with the Palestinians against Israel. During the IDF's recent " Operation Cast Lead' to stem the Palestinian rocketing of Israeli civilians from Gaza, the Pope spoke five times in eight days in favor of the Palestinians. More recently, Vatican representatives did not join the free world representatives who either boycotted or walked out of the Durban II conference in Geneva, when Iranian President Ahmadinejad launched his usual diatribe against Israel. Dr. Minerbi went on to say: 'Now the Pope apparently feels he should be more balanced but he is still pro- Palestinian, period'.

Although Muslims have driven Palistinian Christians out of what was once the predominantly Arab Christian town of Bethlehem, the Vatican ignores this and chooses to blame Israel!

Some Israelis have decided to protest during the Pope's visit but Dr. Minerbi did not think this was the way to express Israel's objections to Vatican policies. Surprisingly, although Muslims have driven Palestinian Christians  out of what was once the predominantly Arab Christian town of Bethlehem, the Vatican ignores this and choses to blame Israel! According to Vatican logic, Israel is at fault due to its dispute with the Palestinians. But what of the fact that Muslims have also driven Arab Christians out of Iraq and other countries in the Middle East? The Vatican also contends that it is the Jewish state (not in those words) that is to blame even for that expulsion.

Is there no awareness in the Vatican that Iranian President Ahmadinejad views himself as the leader of a fanatical Shiite Jihad against Christianity around the globe? Dr. Minerbi replied: 'The Vatican doesn't want to see it!'
